Contemporary Mental Illness Issues

This course will address the following topics: An examination of the historical views of mental Illness, including the bizarre ways in which persons with mental illness have been perceived and treated in the past. A present-day review of mental illness treatment will be provided, presenting modern-day methods of diagnosing, classifying and treating mental illness. Discussion of contemporary biases and stereotypes will be provided – also addressing the resource scarcity available for treatment, the relationship between mental illness and the medical community, the penal system, the pharmaceutical industry, and politics. A special focus of this course will be an overview of mental illness in the State of Iowa and recommendations for properly addressing the needs of the mentally ill in Iowa. Dr. Moore is a retired faculty member at Marshalltown Community College (MCC) and currently teaches part time at MCC and Iowa State University.  $25 for Creative Retirement members.
