This comprehensive 72-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's NHA exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, and other health care settings under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, prescription dispensing, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement.
This is a hybrid course that combines weekly class meetings with independent online coursework. Students should expect to spend approximately 4 to 6 hours per week outside of class completing assignments and coursework. Reliable computer and internet (Wi-Fi) access are required for participation and successful completion of the course.
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the NHA exam and an optional 20-hour externship in a retail pharmacy. Students should have taken math and science courses in high school. A high school diploma or GED is required to sit for the NHA exam.
