« back to classes page
This course meets all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements for individuals who hold a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and are seeking a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
If you plan to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) for industries such as agriculture, landscaping, construction, or other commercial purposes, this training is designed for you.
The program is proficiency-based and combines:
  • Classroom theory instruction
  • Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) range training
  • On-road driving experience
Students will receive training in all FMCSA-mandated topics required for Class A ELDT certification.
Upon successful completion of both the Theory and Behind-the-Wheel portions of the program, students will be ELDT certified. After certification, you will work with your instructor to schedule your DOT Vehicle Inspection and Basic Control Skills Test, the next step toward obtaining your CDL.
Enrollment Requirements:
  • Be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Federal CDL regulations do not allow the use of interpreters.
  • Obtain a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for the desired vehicle class. For more information, visit the Iowa Department of Transportation website: Commercial Learner Permits (CLP).
  • Provide copies of their driver’s license and CLP upon request.
  • Hold a valid CLP for at least 14 days before completing the required CDL skills test.
  • Pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.
Iowa Valley Community College and its instructors reserve the right to modify course curriculum, requirements, and pricing as needed to comply with changes in federal regulations.
