Emergency Medical Responder

Emergency Medical Responders provide out of hospital emergency medical care without transport for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system.  EMRs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize patients in emergencies. Emergency Medical Responders function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Responders perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. This class consists of a minimum of 60 hours of classroom and home study/lab hours. Students will be responsible for the cost of an Iowa background check, NREMT written testing, and the Iowa BEMTS application fee. Textbook is included in the course fee. Students receive pass/fail for classroom, psychomotor, clinical instruction, and affective domain portions.  Instruction is related to patient assessment in areas of basic life support, cardiac arrest, trauma, and medical emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course students will be eligible to take the National Registry Emergency Responder certification test at the EMR level.

 Prerequisite: 
• Must be 17 years of age at time of enrollment and possess a valid driver's license.
• Must be able to read and write English.
• Current CPR Healthcare Provider (American Heart Association) or Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross) level is required prior to starting class.
